Modern Dance Bios

  Catherine Lawrence

Catherine Lawrence began her study of ballet in Paris where she was born. At the age of 18 she traveled to New York where she was exposed for the first time to modern dance. She fell in love with the Graham technique and carried this back with her to Germany where she studied with Pina Bausch, Hans Zullig, Irene Bartos and Vera Volkova among others. She was a principal dancer with both Pina Bausch and with The Netherlands Dance Theatre under the direction of Jiri Kylian. Catherine has worked with a plethora of influential choreographers of the 20th century including such luminaries as Pina Bausch, Jiri Kylian, Glen Tetley, John Butler and William Forsythe to name a few. She has taught at the Royal Conservatory of Dance in the Hague, Netherlands, and she is now of the faculty of Adelphi University. Because of her unusual background and strengths in modern dance as well as classical ballet, Catherine has been able to teach her students a well-rounded curriculum which includes all elements of her experiences.
